8/24/04 - Piseco to Spruce Lake Lean-to #3
|
Dave
The hike into Piseco
this morning was quick and easy. My mom was waiting for us with
our first re-supply. We grabbed some ice-cream at the general
store and considered grabbing some lunch but the only restaurant I
knew off, the OxBo, was not open yet. We drove up toward the
trailhead and stopped at the Piseco Airfield. Nice place with a
small museum-type presentation in the main "building" that has some
old photos and information about the history of flying in the
Adirondacks. A definite stop for aviation enthusiasts or
buffs. |
Trail Tip: The general store that you see
when you first hit the highway is the only place in Piseco to grab a snack or
supplies, so
don't pass it up expecting something else along the way to the Post
Office. Likewise, the Airfield that you will pass right before
hitting the Post Office has the only
public restroom along this stretch that I know of. If you are
looking for lodging or a restaurant - the OxBo Motel is a little
ways past the general store in the opposite direction of the trail.

Jess I had another sleepless night last
night – I’m afraid I’m going to get sick if I don’t start
getting some decent sleep. We only had about three miles
before our first Mom-drop in Piseco this morning. Dave
busted it out in no time – he claims he was in his “morning
glory”, but I suspect he was just excited to see his mom. I
was pretty sore and was just getting warmed up when we
reached Piseco. Had a nice visit with his mom -- she
refueled our supplies and our spirits – and readied
ourselves for our 10+ mile afternoon. We got back on
the trail around 2 pm and had an easy time of it despite our
aches and pains. Had a great lunch at Fall Stream.
I was feeling great and really finding my rhythm for a
while, but a couple of hours after lunch I hit my wall.
My feet were starting to get sore, my legs were fatigued and
it took all of my energy to focus on putting one foot in
front of the other. After a scare with the camera (the
battery cover broke off) that Dave managed to fix, we made
it to Spruce Lake. Wow. It’s absolutely gorgeous
here and worth every bit of pain I have endured. We
found the third lean-to empty and promptly went for a swim.
It was chilly since we didn’t get here until 7:00pm.
The loons were playing in the water, the moon was bright.
Beautiful. |

This place is truly special - Just as
I remembered it. After getting chased from the lean-to by mice we set up the tent
in a picture perfect spot. Stunning night sky above
us, soft grass below us, the calls of the loons echoing off the
mountains and a gorgeous moon reflecting off the lake - absolutely beautiful. Once again Spruce Lake
left me with a memory I will not soon forget. |
